WP Development methodology to consider ?

I’ve been through 2 WP projects involving theme development so far and I’m still wondering if I’m doing right..

Here is the point : I first coded static html templates, and converted then in WP theme (seems what Zac is doing in the courses).

Is it best practice directly coding in php templates (I guess it should be faster as one become accustomed to the hierarchy, but just wanted some feedbacks regarding methods.
