Your html looks fine. Your if /else statement is not in a function so I would put the if else in one.

script.js
function lookupAnswer() {
  if (a > b) {
     alert('insert message here');
} else {
  alert('insert message here');
}
}

lookupAnswer();

var a = 10;
var b = 20;
var c = 30;

if (a > b){
  alert(a + ' is greater than ' + b +'.')
} else {
  alert( a + ' is NOT greater than ' + b + '.')
}

Try this. In this code, you are already giving a fixed value to a and b. As you are passing the value 10 to a, the answer will always be 10 is Not greater than 20. If you use prompt method to ask the questions to user then (if...else....) statement will make some sense.
