Hi, and welcome to The Treehouse Show.
0:00
The Treehouse Show is our weekly
conversation with the Treehouse community.
0:01
In this episode,
we'll be talking with content marketer,
0:10
dog lover, and invisible trumpet player,
Eden Neuendorf.
0:13
Thank you so much for
being on the show, Eden.
0:17
>> Thanks for having me.
0:19
>> You are sort of the master of
the behind the scenes of Treehouse,
0:20
and I am so
excited to ask you some questions.
0:25
>> Okay, let's do it.
0:28
>> What's going on right
now behind the scenes?
0:29
>> So I've started a project,
it's called Quirky Holidays.
0:33
>> Quirky Holidays.
0:38
>> And
I've done some research over the last, for
0:39
the coming eight months
of Quirky Holidays.
0:43
>> Such as?
0:47
>> Like National Dance Day, for example,
is one that we've already done.
0:48
So holidays that are kind of fun and
may be relevant to Treehouse,
0:51
[LAUGH] and what we do.
0:55
But sometimes not, just because I will
choose things that I just wanna see.
0:56
Like National Tell a Joke Day,
1:01
I just wanna see a bunch
of people tell some jokes.
1:02
>> Right.
1:05
>> So yeah, I've been working on that.
1:06
Some fun social content that shows
what we do here at Treehouse,
1:08
and it shows people who work at Treehouse,
which a lot of our followers like to see.
1:14
>> How do you know what
people want to see?
1:21
>> Well, we just did a survey
across all of our three platforms,
1:24
Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
1:28
Just to get a sense of what our
audience likes, why they follow us,
1:31
what they wanna see more of,
what they might wanna see less of.
1:35
So for Instagram specifically, they
really loved behind the scenes photos and
1:38
company culture-type things.
1:44
And so we've kind of been really
embracing that as we move forward.
1:46
>> Okay, cool.
1:51
If somebody didn't get that survey,
1:52
how would they get a hold of you to let
you know what they'd like to see more of?
1:53
>> Yeah,
anybody can definitely always tweet at us.
1:57
Or send us a direct message on Twitter or
Instagram.
2:00
Or comment on our photos.
2:03
>> Okay, and you get those?
2:04
>> Yeah.
2:05
>> Okay, awesome, cool.
2:05
>> We have a small team of people
who [LAUGH] respond to those, but
2:07
that's one of the fun parts
about doing marketing,
2:10
is that I get to interact
with students all the time.
2:13
>> Right, I would imagine that by now,
students are thinking,
2:16
I've heard that voice some place before.
2:20
Can you show them why?
2:23
>> Here's the news from Treehouse for
the week of August 18th.
2:25
>> That's you.
2:29
>> That's me.
2:30
>> So you do voice over?
2:31
>> I do voice over, yeah.
2:32
I have an acting degree actually,
theater performance.
2:34
>> Cool.
2:38
>> But yeah,
I do some voice over stuff as well.
2:39
>> Awesome.
2:41
>> Yeah.
2:42
>> Okay, so
you do all that content marketing, so
2:43
you must have a technical background then.
2:46
>> Nope.
No?
2:48
>> Not at all.
2:49
>> Not at all.
2:50
>> No.
>> How do you do that then?
2:51
>> Well, so, I actually,
like I said before,
2:54
I have a degree in theater performance.
2:57
>> Right.
2:59
>> And prior to working at Treehouse,
I worked for a children's theater company.
3:00
I produced theater and
cast adults in children's theater plays.
3:04
So I guess I wouldn't say
that's technical at all.
3:08
I mean, in other ways, in theatrical ways.
3:12
>> So how did you start here at Treehouse,
what did you do?
3:15
>> So I started off as the office
assistant here actually.
3:18
And I found myself wanting
to do a lot more work.
3:22
I really loved being the office assistant.
3:25
>> You were awesome, by the way.
3:27
>> Thank you, I love making people happy,
and I love organizing things.
3:28
But I found myself wanting to do more and
wanting to learn more about Treehouse.
3:32
And because it was such a new field for
me,
3:35
I wanted to know as much
as I possibly could.
3:38
Cuz the more I know about a company,
the more I can be helpful.
3:40
>> So how did you do that?
3:43
>> I just started reaching out to all
departments and constantly bugging people,
3:44
[LAUGH] saying hey,
can I help you with something?
3:49
I could do this.
3:52
And then as I started slowly building
trust with a lot of people in the company,
3:53
cuz of course, most of the company was
remote, so they didn't really know me.
3:57
And so, as I built trust,
I got more projects and
4:01
really found things that I could
use my skills for, that I enjoy,
4:04
which is how I ended up in
this marketing position.
4:09
>> But how do you do the technical stuff?
4:12
>> I watch a lot of Treehouse videos.
4:14
>> [LAUGH] That's awesome,
talk about dog fitting.
4:16
>> Yeah, I know, so part of my job on the
marketing team is to do course marketing.
4:20
And so in order to do that,
4:25
I wanna understand what the course is
about that I'm marketing, obviously.
4:26
So I watch a lot of courses to get
a sense, to pull screenshots from it,
4:31
and just so that I can better come up with
4:35
ideas to push that course
marketing even further.
4:39
I've taken the digital literacy course.
4:42
That's where I started, and so
I learned a lot of the basics,
4:45
which really is helpful
to me to have a base.
4:48
Because before that,
I didn't have anything.
4:50
So that way, when I'm talking with people,
4:53
I'm slowly getting little pieces
of information here and there and
4:55
starting to build an idea of coding and
the things we do.
4:59
>> That's awesome, did you get ideas for
coding when you were doing that?
5:03
>> I did, actually,
because I do a lot of improv.
5:06
And so I came up with an idea for
an improv app, and so
5:11
I took the how to build a website
course and designed my improv app.
5:15
And so-
>> Nice.
5:20
>> Now I am taking-
>> What does it do?
5:21
>> It generates suggestions.
5:22
>> Like from the audience.
5:24
>> Yeah, so if you're rehearsing with your
improv group at home, instead of having
5:25
someone come up with suggestions,
you don't necessarily have an audience.
5:30
You can just press a button, and
it will give you a suggestion.
5:34
>> Awesome, one of our popular
Instagram hashtags is officedog.
5:36
>> That is true.
5:43
>> We happen to have
a very cute office dog.
5:44
>> We do.
5:46
>> And
you happen to have a very cute home dog.
5:47
[LAUGH]
>> That's true,
5:49
he's actually one and the same.
5:50
[LAUGH]
>> [LAUGH] Can we share?
5:51
>> My #homedog?
5:55
>> Yeah, #homedog.
5:56
[LAUGH]
>> Sure.
5:57
>> [LAUGH] Man, he is so cute.
5:59
And he really kinda takes over Instagram,
doesn't he?
6:02
>> Yeah, yeah, he really does.
6:06
>> What do students wanna see more of?
6:08
Lubbock.
>> Yeah, always.
6:10
>> He's such a-
>> Cute dogs,
6:12
our followers definitely
like cute animals.
6:13
>> Right, and he's so
good to have around the office.
6:15
He brings so much joy to the office.
6:18
He's running around,
he does an amazing little circus trick.
6:20
>> I think you taught him that.
6:25
>> Yeah?
>> Yeah, yeah,
6:26
I don't think he ever did that before.
6:27
>> We'll do that after we're done here.
6:28
>> Yeah, he loves coming to the office.
6:29
It's his favorite thing in the world.
6:31
>> [LAUGH] And you walk him home,
and you're dragging him, and
6:33
he's like this [LAUGH].
6:36
>> He's like, I don't wanna go.
6:37
There's so many people here that
will give me treats and attention.
6:39
>> [LAUGH]
>> Tell me how great I am.
6:42
[LAUGH]
>> [LAUGH]
6:43
>> I mean, who doesn't want that?
6:45
I'd wanna stay at a place that did that.
6:46
Are you gonna get on the table?
6:50
>> He's gonna get up there.
6:51
So you're not miced, so
if you have anything to say, I don't know.
6:52
Aw.
6:55
>> [LAUGH]
>> Aw, that's really nice,
6:56
but I never get this close.
6:59
>> [LAUGH] His breath is
really gross right now.
7:00
[LAUGH]
>> What do you think?
7:02
Sometimes, he comes up
to you at your desk.
7:05
He's got that relationship with you, now.
7:08
>> Yeah, we're bros.
7:09
>> He's like, it's time.
7:11
>> So, one thing that I would like to
point out is that he is very much like
7:12
a Love Dragon for him and Rick's story.
7:16
>> Yes, yeah.
7:20
>> And an Ewok.
7:21
>> And an Ewok, yeah, right now,
in terms of his grooming,
7:22
he's a little more on the Ewok side of the
scale, further away from the Love Dragon.
7:27
But I'm sure our followers
have seen all versions of him.
7:34
>> [LAUGH] Okay,
I'll clean my face off a little bit cuz
7:38
I don't know if there's dog food on it,
[LAUGH].
7:43
That's amazing.
>> He loves you.
7:48
>> So sweet.
7:49
That was a very nice Lubbock kiss,
that was nice.
7:51
>> Good job, Lubbock, you are a star.
7:53
>> [LAUGH] So people now know that
the office dog is your home dog.
7:55
But what's something that they wouldn't
know about you just from following us on
8:02
social media?
8:07
>> Well, I'm an actress, so everybody
knows that, but also, I play the trumpet.
8:08
>> The trumpet?
8:14
>> I do, yes.
8:15
>> Okay, in what form?
8:17
>> Well, I've actually played it
a couple times in shows that I've done.
8:19
>> Really?
8:22
>> So I was acting in the show, and
8:23
I've also got to play my trumpet in it,
which was pretty cool.
8:24
>> Like dun dun dun, here comes the king?
8:28
>> No, I was actually in
the band on stage for a musical.
8:30
But I was also a character in the play,
and so
8:35
I was actively living this character
life while playing the trumpet.
8:37
Which was kinda cool to figure out
how that character would play it.
8:40
>> [LAUGH]
>> Yeah, [LAUGH] I really love jazz music.
8:44
So I kind of had this really secret dream
to just play trumpet in a jazz band.
8:49
And I feel like I'd be
pretty happy doing that.
8:53
>> Nice.
>> Yeah.
8:56
>> Awesome.
8:57
>> Yeah.
>> So, as an improv actress,
8:58
this should be okay to do, I was wondering
if maybe you could close out the show
9:00
doing a trumpet impersonation,
maybe a little theme song,
9:05
what a trumpet might sound like.
9:09
Pretend you have a trumpet.
9:11
>> [LAUGH] God, okay.
9:12
[LAUGH]
>> You're so brave.
9:16
[LAUGH]
>> I am brave.
9:22
>> You are brave.
9:24
>> I am brave.
9:24
>> [LAUGH]
>> I am brave, I am brave.
9:25
[MUSIC]
9:27
>> [LAUGH]
>> [LAUGH] I felt so dumb.
9:39
>> That's so good!
9:43
>> [LAUGH] I felt so dumb.
9:44
>> [LAUGH] You don't
have to do that though.
9:46
>> And now that's recorded forever.
9:50
>> [LAUGH]
>> [LAUGH]
9:52
>> Thanks for watching the Treehouse Show.
