you seem to be jumping ahead. The first task is just assign the first name (as seth demonstrated). Next you can use it in the printf function, per:

String firstName = "Crystal";
console.printf("%s can code in Java!", firstName);

Also, you seem to be using a php syntax for string concatenation. In java, you want "+", not ".". But using printf methods means that concatenation is unnecessary. You can use a placeholder and an argument. So what you were trying to do was probably:

String firstName = "Crystal";
console.printf("hello my name is "+firstName);

To store your name we first need to state the type, String, then the name of the variable firstName. We follow with an equals sign = and your name in quotes.

// I have setup a java.io.Console object for you named console
String firstName = "Seth";
