Deployment of a Spring Web App in Tomcat

Based on the Spring Basics Course, I want to know how can I deploy that web app and others I create into a remote tomcat server. I read that you need to pack the project as a .war file and drop it in the webapps folder of the tomcat server.

to do so I applied the plugin on my build.gradle file

apply plugin: 'war'

then I got the war file and dropped it in the webapps folder of my ubuntu server. Once I did that the app failed on deployment with the following message

FAIL - Application at context path /giflib could not be started

Is the @EnableAutoConfiguration annotation not enough? what else do I need to do?

Please help, I've run out of ideas
