I placed the <nav> tags for the ul, h1, and p, but I still can't get it right.

Where else should I place the <nav> to pass this test?

Have you tried placing the nav tag around the ul?

<nav>
  <ul>
    <li><a href="#">About</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Work</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Contact</a></li>            
  </ul>
</nav>

Then a little down in the code there is a second ul that looks like a nav as well:

<nav>
  <ul>
    <li><a href="#">Recent project #1</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Recent project #2</a></li>
    <li><a href="#">Recent project #3</a></li>            
  </ul>
</nav>

It doesn't look like you've done anything to the challenge code yet. In particular, I don't see the <nav> tags you talked about adding.

But if you're on task 1, "an element that represents a group of introductory or navigational content" would be the header element.
