I'm not sure how to override the attribute and what arguments I am supposed to pass in instead.

I'm trying to override the function, but I'm not sure what to use super with and whether to redefine the function.

inventory.py 
class Inventory:
    def __init__(self):
        self.slots = []

    def add_item(self, item):
        self.slots.append(item)

class SortedInventory(Inventory):
    super().add_item(self)

You don't have to use super to override just do this 

class SortedInventory(Inventory)
    def add_item(self):
        //do something with self or self.slots
