in java it asks Now replace <YOUR NAME> in the console.printf expression with the firstName variable using the string

what exactly is it asking me to do here?

You're doing great. That's the correct printf statement step 3 is looking for. The only issue is the challenge checker is expecting the printf from step 2 to still be there, not replaced. So, it is expecting to see a double output.
