How does the interpreter know what index is referring to? Is this a built in feature that automatically points to an object's position in a sequence?

This line: index = 1
, declares the variable and sets it to 1. So the first time through the loop, the printed string would be 1. roast beef
. This line: index+=1
increments the index variable by 1, so the next time through the loop the printed string would be 2. cucumbers
. And so on until we looped through all the items in the groceries list.
