is Modo Indie ok?

Hi, I'm thinking of starting the 3D art course, but the software they said to use is far too expensive: NZD$50.00 per/mth. However, there is a software avalible on Steam Called Modo indie, for amuch more reasonable price at: 1 month @ NZD $17.99/Month. In the trailer, it looks pretty much the same as Maya but, I want to know wether i'll be able to follow along with the course instructions. Thanks!
