Is the default sort direction always ASC?

If it is, is there any reason to write ASC? For instance, would:

SELECT * FROM customers ORDER BY last_name, first_name;

Be good shorthand for:

SELECT * FROM customers ORDER BY last_name ASC, first_name ASC;

???

Yes ASC is default. You could include it to be explicit, but it is not necessary.
