Keep up the momentum!

This is really annoying. It used to auto play on the next video. I get it for one or two if you haven't been on in a bit... but it's happening after EVERY session.

Maybe this is helping some people but it's not encouraging me, it's just a nuisance that I don't have the ability (that i can see) to stop.

Perhaps an auto-play feature would be helpful for some, but I appreciate that it doesn't because all of the following would no longer be available to me at the end of a lesson:

  1. Comments
  2. Rate
  3. Help
  4. Replay
  5. Teacher's Notes

I don't find an issue with the new "Keep Up the Momentum." It's still just one click to move on to the next step/video...

"Keep up the Momentum" or "Next Step" has no significant difference for me.

:)

(: I'm glad you don't find the repetitive and unnecessary additional clicking bothersome.

I do. And I don't think it should be forced on users without an opt out. A simple, 'do not show again' would be a wonderful addition to this view.

Maybe we are not talking about the same thing. The next video in a course never has auto-played, and you have always had to click "Next Step." Now instead of the button saying "Next Step," it says "Keep up the Momentum." So, it's still the same 'one-click' process to get to the next video/quiz/challenge.

When I said I didn't find an issue, it was because (for me) it's just new wording and not any extra steps at all. I'm not sure how you got the videos to auto-play?

We're talking about the same thing .

Interesting you might be right, I have to check when I get back to a computer.

The next button after the star splash didn't feel like an interrupt but when you look at it as a redesign of the same view I think you're right that it's the same amount of clicks. Doesn't make it less annoying but does make an argument for the value of subtle ui changes and perceived response.

It feels like a useless screen.

The auto play is just the next video starting post next click. It felt like this was an additional step between the old next and the new video, not a replacement for the old next.

It should have a option to stop it to show every time, it's really annoying...

I wasn't among those who transitioned from autoplay to "keep the momentum". So I could see that the intent was for motivating people to finish by patting them in the back. Thus far, the effect for me, I don't find it obtrusive. I find it encouraging actually.

I suppose it is harder for others who've been used to the previous interface, but think of it as any update in the UI like the 3D Touch unlock that replaced the swipe. It just requires some taking used to. ?

Hi Kavan,

I'm not sure what this is referring to but I think you're talking about the next step feature on Treehouse?

For me, the "next step" focuses on the WordPress Development track so I do the 2 or 3 steps it recommends I take. Once done you're then encouraged either to continue or follow another "goal".

You're given recommended courses or paths but the direction you take at all times is entirely up to you. :-)

I'm referring to a new(?) update that tells you to "keep up the momentum" after every section .. And I mean every section, even 2 minute clips that give you 1 point.

I like the next step feature. That's an appropriate use of motivational interrupts.

Every time you complete 3 steps... it could be a video or a quiz or code challenge you'll get a progress graph to show how many steps you have passed that day along with a message "keep up the momentum".

Check out these steps every day on the "right arrow" icon on the top right hand side of your screen :)

Look at the bar above the videos, it shows where are you exactly into that particular stage with a unique progress circle / indicator for the current video / challenge. You can simply click on the next circle for the next video / challenge at will for it to display. As for auto playing all videos in sequence automatically, you can still have that, if at the beginning of the course, you've download them all using the iTune button on the page of the very first video of the course, then you can play them using the iTune playlist for the course, with the added advantage of the ability to review them offline.

I find this feature extremely annoying and intrusive. I can see how it could help some to stay motivated, but for me it's a completely unnecessary roadblock and terrible UX decision.

Having to see a worthless (to me) "Keep up the momentum" stats screen between every single video, without any option to remove it from my learning xp, is the reason I will never subscribe to teamtreehouse. Every other online provider does not force users to complete useless clicks to continue consuming content they're paying for.

The goal should be to reduce clicks to relevant content, not increase; any self respecting UX designer knows this.
