24,063 PointsCalling elements with spacing like your first 2 examples will look for the last element you describe but it has to be a descendant of the first (or any) element(s) before it. so
span .title {}
Looks for an element with the 'title' class that is a descendant of a span element, like
<span>
<a class="title"> </a>
</span>
// or
<span>
<li>
<a class="title"> </a>
</li>
</span>
The other example works the same way, it looks for a span element that is a descendant of an element with the class "title"
Your third example, chaining things together like that will look for an element that means those conditions
span.title {}
looks for a span element with the class of 'title'
<span class="title"> </span>
// but not this
<span>
<a class="title"> </a>
</span>
