I followed the steps of the video. Sass is watching, because this is what the command screen tells me: "
ruby 2.2.6p396 (2016-11-15 revision 56800) [i386-mingw32]
C:\Users\Acer>sass -v Sass 4.0.0.alpha.1 (Bleeding Edge)
C:\Users\Acer>cd Desktop\TTH opdrachten\lake-tahoe
C:\Users\Acer\Desktop\TTH opdrachten\lake-tahoe>sass --watch scss:css
Sass is watching for changes. Press Ctrl-C to stop.
What do I have to do let Sass generate the stylesheet and css map?

Without a proper .scss file, then sass will not detect a template to copy into the css folder. I use Atom as my text edit, and by renaming it within the text editor, the file type changed, and sass was able to write the style.css and style.css.map into my css folder.
A sure way to know that your .scss is actually a .scss file, is to right-click and go to properties. It will show the file type there. Hope this helps

Treehouse Moderator 91,253 PointsHi Rene,
What system are you using to compile Sass?
I ask because it might be a little different to how it works in the videos. Let me explain.
For me, I use Windows 10 and I run Sass on Git Shell. I then use notepad++ which is my preferred text editor. I'll run my watch command, verify that Sass is watching for changes then make the changes that I want to make. I'll then have to click to Git Shell, to verify that changes have been found, and then reload my Sass file to see the compiled changes.
Sometimes the process is a little less automatic than for others.

Front End Web Development Techdegree Student 9,937 PointsHello Jonathan,
I use notepad++, windows 10 and run the start command prompt by ruby as said in the video. Just tried it with Git Shell as well, but the term gem is not recognized. After that I tried to install gem install sass --pre in the git shell, but got an error.
gem : The term 'gem' is not recognized as the name of a cmdlet, function, script file, or operable program. Check the s pelling of the name, or if a path was included, verify that the path is correct and try again. At line:1 char:1
- gem install sass --pre
- ~~~
- CategoryInfo : ObjectNotFound: (gem:String) [], CommandNotFoundException
- FullyQualifiedErrorId : CommandNotFoundException
So both ways aren't working. (yet)

Treehouse Moderator 91,253 PointsDare I ask, because I know it's the most obvious thing, if you've saved the file, which is what triggers changes in Sass! :-)

11,217 PointsThis is the correct answer. I had the same problem. I noticed in VS Code that the file was style.scss.css. I renamed it within the editor. The css file and map was immediately written in the css folder.
