software testing career

what does it take to get a job as an entry level manual/automation software tester without a degree or experience? Are there companies that are willing to train you or how do you get enough experience to get a job in the industry? I've checked the job boards and they want a lot of experience and a degree for employment , even for entry level jobs and internships. I've read that sites like utest can't be counted as experience. what should I do? should I get a certificate in software testing, should I work for free for a few months to get a testing job or internship?

Hi Laurence Cimosz,

Testing does not differ much to development when it comes to how many ways there are in. You could go through University, go through a boot camp, finish courses via Treehouse and Udemy etc and no matter what route you choose you could succeed.

One of my colleagues got his job this route: Course at a local school for unemployed adults (Not sure what this is called in English) -> Internship at a company -> Hired by that same company

I'm afraid I can not give you direct advice for a tester, hopefully, someone else might be able to. My advice would be for you to contact local companies directly (not via job boards and ads) and ask them if they are currently looking for a tester and let them know that you would be interested. Some countries even pay you for internships if they believe it might lead to a job further down the road so definitely check that out.

I hope I made sense to you, it's Friday evening and I'm a bit tired :)

I got a testing job through a connection.

I am sure there are some manual testing jobs that are low pay that you could apply for.

Try to learn some automation on the Quality Assurance courses on Treehouse and put that on your resume. I talked about how those courses helped me advance my career on this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5XjBhGJubc0&t=27s

and why can't testing experience on utest count? It gives you testing experience (I am not a fan of crowd testing fyi)
