usability tests recording software

So, if we wanted to conduct a usability test like the ones described here online? I suppose we could ask the person we've recruited to record their screen and provide their feedback either in written form or just speaking during the video, but that could be a bit complicated, especially for novice computer users. Is there any software or platform out there that facilitates usability tests and their effective recording?

Hi Alex Tasioulis - I personally recommend Camtasia - it's a great multi-purpose editing and recording app - but have also heard good things about Screenflow. If you're going to be recording the screen, however, it's best to have the recording software setup on your own testing computer, and then have the test subject use that. Then, make sure you have multiple browsers installed so they can use whatever their preference is, and the experience should be real enough when compared to them using their own devices.

For more info, I go into more detail in my Usability Testing workshop.

Oooh, it looks like once I've finished my basic training I'll have to go gold and watch some of these workshops...

You know, it looks like what I was thinking about doesn't exist. I meant an online service where you can add your site (as a url or direct upload) and then have somebody "test" it. They are given a link, and when they join, they are prompted to give some basic info about themselves (email/name, perhaps a password that you gave them beforehand), and then their session is automatically recorded - when they're done, you get a full report with heatmaps and stuff. Maybe somebody should build that...

I'm thinking you're either looking for something like this where they get people to test your site for you, or this where you provide a series of screens and questions and you get responses from a set of users through their service. Either option is probably closer to what you're looking for...
