CSS CSS Basics (2014) Fundamental Concepts Learning Tips and Tools

Very nice course

I completed CSS Foundations & Layouts back in October of last year. Gave this new updated CSS Basics a go, having now done the Web Design & Front End Web Developer tracks, to refresh my memory on things like gradients and positioning before I start working on projects of my own in earnest. This is a really good course.

The Lake Tahoe landing page provides a nice structure to the course; you see how everything you're learning contributes towards creating a professional looking page. I didn't notice anything on animations, and fewer pseudo classes were covered here, but maybe this omission was intentional so as not to scare the newbies. And maybe some of it is in the teacher's notes and documentation and I just missed it.

Anyway

Hi Jay Lacey,

I'm glad to hear that you enjoyed the course!

Yep, it's intentionally a basics course––the first of several that will eventually replace CSS Foundations. We just released a brand new course on CSS Selectors, and stay tuned for more advanced CSS courses. :)

Agree. Great course! It was really helpful to work on the Lake Tahoe page while learning the CSS concepts. The course is comprehensive in nature and covered many of the capabilities of CSS, making it a great starting point.

I agree that the course was solid. I learned a great deal. The modules on selectors, layouts, and new features were the most useful. The examples in the new features module were exceptional because they explained the concept and showed creative ways to apply them. The application of gradients to the header image was particularly eye opening.

My only gripe is that I walked away without enough knowledge of how to layout a page in different ways. Before I can really undertake side/practice projects that are not severely limited in layout scope, I need more knowledge. So, as opposed to moving on the the Javascript basics course, I'm going to go through the CSS Layout Basics course. As layouting is such a critical skill for FE devs, it seems to make sense that a deeper discussion of layouts (how to build grids, etc.) would be appropriate on track.

Thanks again, Guil, for a great experience. Looking forward to the layout course next!

Yep, all that's covered in CSS Layout Techniques . :)

Awesome course! I took this track awhile back and getting back to it since I got a job in web and forgot everything I started to learn in the Javascript Foundations. I decided to start all over and found that this course was really well done this time around. I especially appreciated the " tips&tricks" video where you explain that practice, patients, and hard work pays off.

Getting that "face to face" makes a huge difference, since some of us don't have mentors and/or more experienced brains to pick. Feels like the technology is changing more quickly than us newbs can pick up - however, I really appreciate the updated information and watching a solid course.

I appreciate the different styles teachers use on this website, with Guil Hernandez I find his use of the "spotlight" tool handy when pointing out specific things on a page.

I also really want to visit Lake Tahoe now!!

Thanks for the kind words, kevinpixelkojan!

I have a new CSS Layout course coming out next week and a Flexbox course in 2 1/2 weeks. Bootstrap 4 will be covered in a new course or workshop so stay tuned for that, too. :)

Very nice indeed, I really enjoyed the course! Great experience so far, so many ideas e things to create and test. I'm very excited to learn more!

I had a great time with this course! The instructors teaching is very lucid and it was very easy to pick up the concepts! I was pretty impressed with how one can use gradients to get some pretty awesome designs!

Hands down... the best newb course on CSS. I got a well-rounded, strong grasp on all the basics of CSS - selectors, box-model, padding/border/margin, boxing selector, and so much more. This course cleared a lot of confusion I previously had about CSS. For me, I just don't understand concepts by reading. However, this video series really helped me fill in all the gaps I initially had on CSS. Thank you so much Guil for this course! I really really loved it, enjoyed it, and learned a ton from it! :)
