We have the generic input "> "... what does this mean?

He says that we are making the input generic with "> ", because they are either typing an item or a command like "Help" or "Done"...

But what makes "> " generic? Could this be any random input?

It's generic only in the sense that when a ">" pops up on the screen, it lets the user know the program is ready for input, but it doesn't really indicate what kind of input to give.

The prompt string is purely for the user's information and has no impact on program itself.
