what did i do wrong here?

java.

Equality.java 
// I have imported a java.io.Console for you, it is named console. 
String firstExample = "hello";
String secondExample = "hello";
String thirdExample = "HELLO";

if (firstExample.equalsIgnoreCase("secondExample"))  
console.printf("first is equal to second" );

In your equalsIgnoreCase method secondExample shouldn't be enclosed in quotes. Otherwise you are comparing to the value "secondExample" instead of "hello"

When using the equalsIgnoreCase method, you needed to pass in the secondExample variable but instead you passed that as a string. Just remove the quotes and should work!
