Why does %s not work for me in a few lessons?

I try to use the %s to reference the first name, but it keeps giving me errors

String firstName = console.readLine(" ");

String lastName = console.readLine(" ");

console.printf("First name %s, firstName);

IO.java
String firstName = console.readLine("               ");

String lastName = console.readLine("                ");

console.printf("First name %s, firstName);

You did not closed "

console.printf("First name %s, firstName);

should be

console.printf("First name %s", firstName);
