Why [serializeField] over using 'public'? (for use in Unity)

What are differences of using

[serializeField]
private Transform playerTransform;

over

public Transform playerTransform;

:point_right: The difference is within the program, not in the inspector.

Both methods will cause the field to be visible and editable within the inspector. But making a field public also allows other parts of the program to access it.

Within the program itself, a private field can only be accessed from the class in which it is defined.
